Paul Elliott, 46, and his stepson Finley Munro, 21, died in the A49 Dinmore crash on 13 October. Police still want witnesses and dashcam footage.

Two men died in a crash involving two cars and a lorry on the A49 at Dinmore on Tuesday 13 October. West Mercia Police has named them as Paul Elliott, 46, and Finley Munro, 21. Finley was Paul’s stepson.

Updated 31 October: the force named both men and published their families’ tributes on 29 October, renewed its appeal for witnesses and gave an incident number.

A man was arrested and has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Dinmore is on the A49 about seven miles north of Hereford, on the main road to Leominster.

The families’ tributes

West Mercia Police published two statements on Thursday 29 October.

Paul Elliott’s family called him “a much loved son, brother, father and friend”. He was known to family and friends as Dobbin. His family said: “He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We would like to thank all emergency services for their incredible efforts and support.”

Finley Munro’s family said he was known as Finn or Finny. They described him as “a much-loved son of Ellie Munro and his step-father Paul Elliott, who also sadly lost his life in this incident, much-loved partner of Jenna-May, much-loved brother to Martha and Ollie and a much-loved grandson.”

The force says Paul’s Vauxhall Astra was in collision with the Citroën and the lorry, and that Finley was a passenger in it. Both men died at the scene.

Detective Constable Joshua Wildig said: “This is a deeply tragic incident, and we are committed to establishing exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the collision.”

What the police said

West Mercia Police published its appeal on Wednesday 14 October. That first statement gave these details:

  • the collision happened at around 4.10pm on Tuesday 13 October
  • it involved a Vauxhall Astra, a Citroën C3 Picasso and a DAF lorry
  • the Astra’s driver, a man in his 40s, and a passenger, a man in his 20s, died at the scene
  • a 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs
  • he has been released on bail while enquiries continue

The two statements of 29 October give the arrested man’s age as 65; the first statement said 59. The force has not explained the change. An arrest is not a charge. The force has not said whether anyone else was hurt or how long the road was closed.
