Rotherwas tip in Hereford opens 8am to 4pm every day from 1 October, two hours shorter than summer. You must book first. All six Herefordshire sites listed.

Hereford’s tip, the household recycling centre on Chapel Road, Rotherwas, is open 8am to 4pm, seven days a week from 1 October to 31 March. That is two hours shorter than summer, when it closes at 6pm. You cannot just turn up: every visit has to be booked online first, and the council says drivers without a booking are turned away.

The quick answer

  • Hereford (Rotherwas) and Leominster: 8am to 4pm every day through the winter. The other four sites open three or four days a week.
  • Book before you go, on foot and by bike too. There is a limit of four bookings per fortnight per household or vehicle.
  • All sites close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, and open as normal on the other days of the holiday.

Ross-on-Wye is the only site the council lists with bank holiday hours: 10am to 4pm in winter and 10am to 5pm in summer.

How booking works

The booking system is run through Worcestershire’s waste site booking service, linked from the council’s page. The rules:

  • Book a slot for the site you want and show your online pass on arrival.
  • Four bookings per fortnight per household or vehicle.
  • Herefordshire residents only, and household waste only. No trade or business waste.
  • Walking in is allowed only at Kington, Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye, and pedestrians still need a booking. Cyclists can use any site, again with a booking.
  • A van, or a trailer longer than 1.3 metres, needs a commercial vehicle and trailer e-permit before you book.

The council recommends booking in Chrome.

What the tips are not taking

Fridges, freezers and other cooling appliances are not accepted at any Herefordshire tip at the moment. The council blames a national shortage of capacity to process them and points to alternative options on its site. We covered the suspension in our report on the fridge and freezer ban.

Christmas and New Year

The council’s Christmas rubbish and recycling page says all recycling centres close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and are open as usual for the rest of the festive period. This year those days are Friday 25 December, Saturday 26 December and Friday 1 January. Booking still applies.
