Hereford Christmas Trains and Parking: What to Expect

Expect no trains to or from Hereford on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. That was the position last year of Transport for Wales and West Midlands Railway, two of the three operators that serve the station. The 2026 festive timetables and engineering works have not been published yet: National Rail’s list of planned works runs only to mid December so far.

The quick answer

• No trains and no rail replacement buses on 25 and 26 December, going by what Transport for Wales and West Midlands Railway announced last year.
• Last trains leave earlier on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Last year TfW services began closing down from 9pm on both nights.
• Free city centre parking after 4pm ran on three December Wednesdays last year. The 2026 dates are not out yet.

Which trains serve Hereford

• Transport for Wales: north to Shrewsbury, Crewe and Manchester, south through Abergavenny to Newport and Cardiff.
• West Midlands Railway: east through Ledbury, Great Malvern and Worcester to Birmingham.
• GWR: through Worcester and Oxford to London Paddington.

What happened last Christmas

These are the 2025 arrangements, the most recent the operators have published. They are a guide to the pattern, not this year’s timetable.

Transport for Wales said on 19 December 2025 that there would be no trains or rail replacement buses on 25 and 26 December, that services would finish earlier than normal on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and that they would start later on 27 December. Its notes to editors said trains would start to close down from 21:00 on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day it ran a full mainline service (Transport for Wales).

West Midlands Railway ran no services on Christmas Day or Boxing Day and an amended timetable between Christmas and New Year, according to its festive travel guide. The guide listed rail replacement buses between Worcester and Kidderminster or Bromsgrove until 4pm on 28 December. It also offered 50% off Off-Peak Day Returns between 27 December and 5 January.

In 2024 WMR said it would run an earlier shutdown on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and warned passengers not to rely on late trains on either night (West Midlands Railway).

Christmas 2026 dates to plan around

Bank holiday dates from GOV.UK. The expectations in the right-hand column are based on last year’s pattern and will be replaced with the 2026 timetable when it is published.

Engineering works already booked

The closures published so far that affect Hereford come before Christmas:

• Monday 26 to Friday 30 October: no trains between Worcester and Hereford all week, buses replace them (National Rail). More on our half term page.
• Sunday 1 November: the 20:30 Manchester to Cardiff runs only as far as Hereford, with a bus to Cardiff, because of overnight work between Hereford and Newport (National Rail).

Nothing is yet listed for 24 December to 2 January. Check again once the festive timetables appear.

Christmas parking in Hereford

Herefordshire Council paid for free parking on set dates last Christmas, announced on 20 November 2025 (Herefordshire Council):

The council also said parking in the market towns is free after 6pm every day and all day on Sundays. Private car parks were not included unless signed. Car parks and charges are on our parking in Hereford page.

• The 2026 Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve last trains for each operator, usually published in December.
• Any engineering works between 24 December and 2 January.
• The 2026 free parking dates, which last year came out on 20 November.
